A December to Remember! Clinical neuroscience combines medicine, psychiatry, neurophysiology, and psychology into a brain-behavioral paradigm. In this workshop will begin with a review of the history of clinical neuroscience and neurotherapy and explore the relationship between brain function and anatomical structure. We explain our model of treatment, selecting neurotherapy protocols according to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs model. This approach is an evolution of the work of Joseph Kamiya, M. Barry Sterman, and Siegfried and Susan Othmer, among others. How to prioritize, train, and alter EEG activity based on Maslow's needs will be described, along with evidence supporting the effectiveness of this model.

Attendees will also gain a solid foundation in quantitative EEG (qEEG) skills including acquisition, artifact management, reviewing the raw EEG, and basics of frequency analysis. This will be an intermediate to advanced course conceptually, but a beginning course for EEG acquisition and the utilization of analysis software. Even if attending practitioners are not interested in performing qEEGs, they will gain understanding of the meaning of the reports and how to implement training protocols to yield better outcomes for their patients or clients. (Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.)

He is a Fellow of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research and editor of the society's Journal of Neurotherapy for 10 years, Past-President of the Neurofeedback Division of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, founding member of Society for the Advancement of Brain Analysis, and founder of Kaiser Academy and the American Neurotherapy Association, an institute for training professionals in neuroplasticity research and practice and a society which publishes peer-review evidence for neuroplasticity treatment modalities. He has taught psychology and neuroscience courses at all levels of instruction including community college, high school, adult education, and major universities and has written EEG exams for multiple certification boards and institutions. He earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from University of California at Los Angeles and an MFA from the University of Iowa. His interests include autism, social neurodynamics, and neuroplasticiy.

Andrea Meckley, MA, BCN, QEEGT, has been working at the Center for the Advancement of Human Potential since 2000, specializing in EEG assessment and neurotherapy of anxiety, depression, early trauma, and traumatic brain injury. She is a member of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR) and the Society for the Advancement of Brain Analysis (SABA). She was an instructor for EEG Spectrum Internationa and faculty member faculty for Evidence Based Neurotherapy of the Society for the Advancement of Brain Analysis. She collaborates with Dr. David Kaiser on their successful web-based meetings on quantitative EEG analysis and evidence-based neurotherapy courses. She has been involved in conducting research on the neurodevelopmental impact of early childhood abuse and trauma and earned her Master’s Degree in Health Psychology.

Ed Hamlin, Ph.D., BCN, serves as the Clinical Director of the Center for the Advancement of Human Potential and is the President of the Institute for Applied Neuroscience. He taught at UNC and Duke University before moving to Asheville. He has worked in a variety of settings including general medical facilities, university teaching hospitals, and psychiatric hospitals. Dr. Hamlin specializes in applied neuroscience for attention problems, cognitive disorders, depression, anxiety, and functional dysregulation associated with traumatic brain injuries. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the International Neuropsychological Society, the Society for the Advancement of Brain Analysis, and the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. He obtained his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina.
